Montejo and Associates offers legal service to celebrate your civil weddings. We will take care of all the legal details.  For us it is a privilege and honor to be part of your celebration and assist you at all times.

Marriage in Costa Rica is legal and binding if processed properly. It is mandatory that the ceremony is overseen by a certified notary public for a marriage license to be issued by the Costa Rican Civil Registry. Our role is to coordinate these logistics and ensure that the corresponding embassy authenticates the marriage for it to be official at the bride’s and groom’s country and legal and valid worldwide .


Weddings have the following requirements:

  • birth certificate of the bride and groom
  • civil status certificate (if divorced, indicate the name of the ex husband or ex wife and the date of the divorce)
  • copies of the passports of the bride and groom and the witnesses
  • two witnesses

All original certificates must be sent to the offices of Montejo and Associates at least a month in advance (for the due publication of the corresponding public notice and all the paper work) in some special cases the documents will be allowed to enter our offices at least 15 days in advance; in this cases, we execute a sworn declaration, where the bride and groom swear that their civil status is free (single, widowed or divorced) and that they are therefore able to get married legally.

All our lawyers are in capacity to celebrate the civil ceremony in English or Spanish, we always try to detail all the obligations that the bride and groom are acquiring at that moment, according to our legislation.

Our legal service includes:

  • celebration of the wedding in English or Spanish
  • publication in the official newspaper
  • previous meeting in our offices located in the Do it Center, which lasts thirty minutes, with one of our notaries in order to explain to the bride and groom the legalization procedure and validation of the marriage in their country of origin
  • marriage certificate during the celebration
  • delivery of the registered and legalized documents via DHL to the physical address abroad of the bride and groom; all of them properly translated into their native language
  • embassy taxes and taxes of the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Affairs
